Background: Not much is known about Ethan's past beyond the fact that he is British and sometime in his early twenties (in the early seventies) he got into magic. The dark kind. He and his friend Ripper AKA Rupert Giles practiced magic for personal pleasure and gain until they discovered a demon name Eyghon, the Sleepwalker. They tattooed themselves and mates with the mark of the demon. They would then take turns falling asleep while the rest of the group called the demon into the sleeper. It was in the words of Giles, "An extraordinary high, a euphoric feeling of power, but it was also risky." The difference between Giles and Ethan was that while Giles saw the down side of that risk, Ethan only saw the power and the adrenalin that comes with beating the risk. Like Russian roulette. Eyghon took control of one of their mates, Randall, and they all tried to exorcise him. Unfortunately, it resulted in Randall's death. Giles felt great guilt over that, but Ethan, he believed that it was a chance you took. There might have been remorse from Ethan but certainly no guilt. Giles returned to Oxford and went back to his duties to become a Watcher. Ethan on the other hand embraced the darker magics and chaos. This was when the rift happened. They stopped being mates when Ethan began worshipping chaos. Ethan became a strong sorcerer over the years until his path crossed Rupert's once again. He came to Sunnydale to create chaos in Ripper's town. There was a dual purpose to his visit. Create chaos, but also to rip off the mask of civility that Ripper wore. Ethan knew exactly what Giles was like but the others didn't. It was his way of saying, "You may have them fooled, Ripper. But not me. You can't run from who you are." In a sense it worked. For the first time there was a glimpse of the darker side of Giles, the Ripper, and it took Ethan to bring it out. There will always be a bond between the two mates. Their paths cross time and time again. When Ethan realized that the demon had returned he warned Giles. He didn't have to, he could have sacrificed him without his knowledge, but he didn't. True, he had plans to hide behind the Slayer and keep his own skin, but the fact was that he could have done that without warning Giles. The fact that he chose to do so openly so Buffy could protect Giles (as well as himself) speaks volumes. The last time their paths crossed was when Ethan came to Sunnydale to warn Giles about the Initiative Project 314 (Adam). It was throwing the worlds out of balance. "It goes way beyond chaos and into one hell of a fight." Ethan turned Giles into a Fyarl demon. As always, his schemes were one part distraction and one part glee. The glee is creating chaos and watching it unfold, while the distraction was bringing Giles and his Slayer closer to the knowledge of Project 314. The problem with this particular stunt was that Ethan stayed around to gloat. In his words, "I've got to learn to just do the damage and leave town. It's the stay-'n-gloat gets me every time." Riley and the Initiative took him off to a secret 'rehabilitation' facility in the Nevada desert where he later escaped to cause chaos elsewhere.* Physical Description Height: 6'0" Hair: Brown Eyes: Brown Build: Slim Distinguishing Marks: None. Used acid to burn off the Mark of Eyghon. *Note: This is for RP only. In S8 comic canon, Ethan was still being held in a government cell. Personality: Giles: We've got to face it. We've changed. Well, not you - you're still sadistic and self-centered. Ethan: Here's to me. That pretty much sums up Ethan as we know him. He is self-centered, always thinking of the next pleasure and saving his own skin. The sadistic part comes into play the way he gets his amusement. As Ethan says he is chaos' degenerate son. He loves to cause chaos and watch everyone scramble to deal with it. First and foremost, Ethan is a survivor. He will risk it all, loves the adrenalin that comes with the rush of playing Russian roulette with magic but at the end of the day he will save his hide over anyone else. Including, Rupert Giles. Ethan is also very hedonistic, looking for the next pleasure, the next high, whether it comes from magic or anything else. He is the embodiment of wanting that rush to feel alive. There is also a caring side to him. One that very few people see or perhaps a better description is only very few people bring out in him. If he truly was only hedonistic and sadistic, Ethan certainly wouldn't have had friends. Friends enough that would trust him with their lives calling a demon into their sleeping body no matter how much they wanted the rush of it. In the S8 comics, Ethan finds redemption after spending time being held by the government. A couple of years in a cell after years of worshiping chaos wouldn't have changed him if he hadn't had it inside him already. If the death of a mate hadn't done it, mellowing with age certainly wouldn't. It was in Ethan to begin with, just lying dormant. |
